Our public colleges and universities provide a pathway to opportunity for countless New Yorkers, but for years, the state underfunded them. The result? Cuts to academic programs, student services, faculty and staff. It's time to make a generational investment in SUNY, CUNY and community colleges so they live up to their promise of providing accessible, world-class higher education for all New Yorkers who want it. Read on… NYSUT Member Action Center The New Deal for Higher Education 📉 Long-term underinvestment. Years of chronic underfunding have led to a steady decline in critical support for students’ academic progress and success. Although the last state budget cycle made meaningful investments in public higher education, this doesn't make up for a generation of underfunding, and it's insufficient to meet the needs of today's economy and workforce. 💸 What students and staff need. Funding for more full-time faculty, better adjunct pay, more support for SUNY hospitals and increased funding for student mental health services to support students facing financial and personal difficulties. 🎓 Living up to the ideal. Every student deserves access to affordable and accessible higher education. That means public colleges and universities that don’t burden students with lifelong debt and are located within the local community, so New Yorkers from every background have educational opportunities. Take action: Tell our lawmakers to ensure every New Yorker has access to a quality public higher education. Tell them we need a NEW DEAL FOR HIGHER ED! 💪 We need a New Deal for Higher Ed! A generational investment in our SUNY, CUNY and community colleges is necessary if we genuinely value educational opportunities for all New Yorkers and want our state to remain a global leader in innovation and industry.
