This past week can be summed up as exasperating. We began the week with an allfaculty email discussion concerning the Administration’s decision to shut down our previously unrestricted access to the allncc email list. As we are sure you know by now, the Administration alleges its decision was predicated by an unknown threat sent to [...]
The NCCFT Executive Committee wants to welcome Dr. Faren Siminoff as Secretary of the NCCFT. Dr. Siminoff has hit the ground running and we look forward to strengthening our team with the expertise and energy she brings to the union. We want to thank Prof. Richard Newman for coming forward to run for this position [...]
NCCFT members are wearing buttons that encourage students and other members of the campus community to ask us what it’s all about. The “it” is the newly energized activism of the faculty. So, what is that all about?
It’s about protecting the academic integrity of our degree and certificate programs.
It’s about keeping classes small so that our [...]
The sudden resignation of Michael Freeman from the Board of Trustees has certainly come as a shock, at least to us. We are also surprised that the announcement about his resignation indicated that it was for personal reasons, despite coverage in Newsday and The New York Times that same morning of his indictment along with [...]
What the Forked! Let me be clear about the FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) requests mentioned in Chuck Cutolo’s allncc email. The NCCFT Collective Bargaining Agreement provides for the NCCFT to form a Budget Committee in order to make budgetary recommendations to the college. Dr. Faren Siminoff has agreed to Chair our ad [...]
On behalf of the NCCFT Executive Committee, I want to thank all of you who voted to support the Chairs, Senate and Union leadership with your “Vote of No Confidence” in President Astrab’s ability to continue to lead this College. After the tally indicated that over 89% of you voted in favor of the [...]
Today, June 20, 2011, the NCCFT Executive Committee attended meetings of the Nassau County Legislature’s Rules and Finance committees. We addressed the Finance committee before it voted to forward the NCC budget to the full legislature. The full legislature will consider the NCC budget, along with many others, at a meeting next Tuesday, June 28, [...]
Last night’s Board of Trustees meeting was attended by over 100 faculty who were there to share their concerns about the leadership of President Astrab and the Board itself. We were taken by surprise when the Board moved to consider an item not on their calendar, and that item turned out to be a 3.5 year extension to the President’s contract, which was approved with no public discussion. The Board did not consult the faculty in evaluating the President, despite an earlier call by Academic Senate Chairperson Kimberley Reiser that they do so, in keeping with the guidelines of the Association of Community College Trustees.
At the conclusion of the Board’s agenda, they recognized individuals who signed up to speak. Twenty three people spoke, with only one speaker offering words of support for the President.
